Q For Essay #2, you will be performing a comparison between two filmed versions of a story using the type of film analysis called contextual analysis. To refresh your understanding of contextual analysis, please review its description in this Film Analysis handout . So, in looking at the two versions of the films, you will be asked to analyze how the context in which they were made--i.e. the historical context and culture of the moment/year(s) it was made, the place of this film in the director's career, etc.--contribute to your understanding and evaluation of the films in comparison to one another. This will require some research. For this discussion and sharing assignment, you are to locate two articles that speak to the context of the times in which the films were made and/or the context of the films in relation to the director, producer, and other people vital to the making of the film. One of these articles must be from a peer reviewed journal and one must be from a popular source (albeit a popular source that nevertheless passes the CRAAP test talked about in 5.2). Certainly you should be able to find journal or popular articles centered on the films themselves that discuss the contexts in which the films were made, but again, it may be that you locate articles that are solely about the context of the times or the makers of the films. Either way, find one of each type, a scholarly source and a popular source, and once you have then do the following: Summarize each of the articles and describe how they deepen your understanding of the contexts in which the films were made and how these articles help you understand the meaning(s) of the films in relation to one another and/or what characteristics distinguish the films as being part of their times. Your discussion post should consist of 2-3 meaty paragraphs. Once you have posted your response, choose a classmate's post and comment on what insights you find most compelling in their post and what suggestions you have for clarifying any of their points or raising any further questions you have about their post.
